Get Lost! Most Remote Places In The World


Haven’t we all felt at least once that feeling of wanting to be on a deserted island, when stuck in a traffic jam, or having to do some mundane tasks at work? Luckily, in this post, we are getting a bit more serious, and will find out some of the most remote places in the world. Don’t get too lost!

Svalbard – Norway

Where is it? North of mainland Europe, almost midway between Norway and the North Pole in the Arctic Ocean.
How many people live there? 2,642 inhabitants
What can I do there? Experience the majestic, powerful, and raw Arctic nature. Visit the world’s northernmost church; furthermore, you can even explore Soviet-era settlements of Barentsburg!
And how can I even get there? Longyearbyen serves regular flights from Oslo and Tromsø.

Alert – Canada

Where is it? Canada’s far north, Nunavut Territory in Qikiqtaaluk Region. 817 kilometres from the North Pole.
How many people live there? 0-5 inhabitants
What can I do there? You can proudly claim that you have visited the world’s northernmost permanently inhabited place.
And how can I even get there? No civil flights are operated to Alert, but having a reason good enough for getting the permit, you might be able to score a seat on one of the few authorized charters. Scientific work and documentary making might do the trick.

The Pitcairn Islands

Where is it? Four small islands in the South Pacific; farther from any continent than any other inhabited island in the world (according to some sources, at least).
How many people live there? 56 inhabitants
What can I do there? Pitcairn island is the inhabited one, others have no settlements whatsoever. There you can go swimming, snorkelling, or exploring the remains of the legendary Bounty.
And how can I even get there? Only by boat as the nearest airport is 330 miles away on another island.

Tristan da Cunha – British Overseas Territory

Where is it? In the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean.
How many people live there? 297 inhabitants
What can I do there? Going on a fishing excursion, hiking, climbing and even playing some golf. Additionally, a visit to any of the adjacent islands is also an inviting possibility.
And how can I even get there? As there are no airstrips on Tristan da Cunha, you need to organize a seat on a polar research ship or one of the fishing vessels departing from Cape Town. Also, some cruise ships visit Tristan da Cunha between December and April.

Easter Island – Chile

Where is it? In the southeastern Pacific Ocean; one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world.
How many people live there? 6148 inhabitants
What can I do there? Take a look at the famous ceremonial platforms called Ahu, do some trekking, and eat some of the traditional food prepared on umu (a type of earth oven).
And how can I even get there? Daily flights from Santiago de Chile, and weekly flights from Tahiti are available.
